I have a rebuilt 302 and smokes some at idle and alot at acceleration. I seem to have some oil residue in the exhaust and i did the pistons right were i dont have the rings in a straight line everything is correct. i ran synthetic at first thanks to misleading summit technicians, but then after finding out this is not what to do i used motor flush and tried to clean it out then ran conventional oil with zinc treatment. I also did a compression test and on cyliners 5 and 6 i recieved 150 cylinders 7 and 1 i have 130 and the rest are 120. i have put 100 miles on it and still acts the same.... but now for some reason i am losing quite a bit of oil... like a quart in a half in a 30 mile drive. i have alot of after market parts such as custom ground cam, afr heads, edelbrock upper and lower intake, 30lbs injectors and mass air flow. anybody have suggestions thanks. Good rebuilt engines come with excellent warranties, cheap rebuilds don't. which one did you buy? There are "chop shops" that pull engines and then just change the oil, spark plugs, and finally they steam clean the engine. You got ripped off and should contact your State AG's Office and let them get your money back for you. No matter what, DON"T drive that engine one more mile! The company will look for reasons to blame you so don't put any more miles on it.I have blueish/gray smoke coming from the exhaust on rebuilt 302?
I agree with Neil. Perform a wet test on all of the cylinders and record your readings. You will need to put a teaspoon or so of motor oil into each cylinder and crank it a few times with the coil wire removed and then take the reading. If the readings are rising then the problem is with the rings. Check your piston sizes as compared to the bore and check the end gap on the rings. I suspect that the 130 and 120 reading cylinders have some kind of probem with the rings. If the wet test yields the same results as the dry test then you will have to remove and inspect both heads and replace the head gaskets but with the engine consuming a quart of oil in thirty miles it is doubtful that this is a head problem. .I have blueish/gray smoke coming from the exhaust on rebuilt 302?
Did you check the gap on the rings? The major difference in compression on the cylinders means either valve stem seals are shot, or piston rings are shot. Drop a few drops of oil into the bores with the lower compression, if this makes the compression rise then your rings are leaking. If it doesn't affect the compression, then the valves need re-grinding properly.
Did u do the break in cycle on the engine correct? or it could be a bent valve.
