Comment/critique some writing, please?

I wrote this today, but my writing is troubling me recently because either I'm getting more critical or it's withering slowly when I don't write often enough. You can just leave a short comment but it would also be nice if you could answer few questions :D -

1. How's the overall flow, pacing, feeling, etc.? Show not tell, balance of description to action, and so on?

2. This is supposed to be in POV third limited of Raven - in the beginning before I give them names, am I mingling POVs or is it all right?

3. Does it hold your interest or is it getting boring? Should I try to condense it or should I try to describe things more?

4. And just wondering, what would you say my 'writing style' seems like (not sure if I'm getting that term right :/)? I asked a friend to read a bit recently and they don't seem to see the way I write remotely close to the way I do O_O What do you think?

Thanks a lot! :D

The sky was a mottled, dusky purplish blue when the raven flew across the town, startlingly black against the subdued tones of the town. It glided through the air, immense dark wings outspread, cawing as night began to draw its shroud over the world. The first stars blinked drowsily in the sky, still obscured by the clouds.

Below, a woman sitting on the balcony looked up and spied the raven in the sky. She bent slowly and let the ginger tabby she was holding slip free from her arms. Standing, the woman adjusted her bun, the black strands mingled with gray. She raised a thin arm and waved at the raven in the sky.

The raven drew near and wheeled twice around the balcony, cawing softly as it descended in a lazy spiral it light upon the balcony guardrail. It ****** its feathered head, a bright black eye peering at her.

“Evening, Raven,” the woman said, her eyes creasing as she smiled. “What news do you bring?” The raven bobbed its head and held out one of its feet. The woman reached out to untie the message from its leg.

As soon as the last bit of red string came free, the raven hopped down from its perch to crouch on the cold stone floor. As it held itself there, still as stone, a soft, warm light began to emanate from its body. The woman looked away and shielded her eyes with her hands. The light grew and the woman closed her eyes as it became brighter and brighter.

“Done,” a husky voice said. The woman turned, lowering her arms, and smiled at the girl standing before her. She was slight, a small girl, but her dark eyes shone with life and intelligence.

“Are you all right, Raven?” the woman said. “You weren’t hurt in the mountains?”

“No, but I was almost discovered once or twice.” Raven laughed. “I didn’t think they would catch on, but Anaris made me spend a day or two sitting in a cage. A cage, Nan. Think of that.”

Nan gave a small smile. “Well, at least it worked as a disguise,” she said.

Raven snorted. “But I was in my raven form! What would you think if you saw an ugly, ordinary coal-colored bird sitting in a display cage meant for those exotic birds at the markets?”

Nan smiled and unrolled the message Raven had been carrying. She squinted at the scroll, holding it up against the light to see it better.

“What does it say?” Raven came to stand behind Nan, peering at the black lines etched on the scroll, flowing smoothly together despite their sharp turns. “Anaris wouldn’t tell me.”

Nan’s lips moved as she read. “Not him,” she muttered.

“What? Who?” Raven cried, frustrated. “Tell me, Nan!”

“ It’s him,” Nan said, “Lord Red. He’s going to Grayin.” Nan’s face was creased with worry. “We have to tell the others – Miran, and –”

“Why didn’t Anaris tell me?” Raven said. “I could have – I could have warned…”

“He was afraid you wouldn’t go straight to me,” Nan said. “That you might have tried to go to…” she faltered.

“Mother!” Raven said, gritting her teeth. “But she’s in Grayin! If Red sees her, he’ll have her killed.”

“I know, Raven, I know.” Nan rubbed her face. The ginger tabby wandered back onto the balcony, mewing softly. Raven reached down to stroke the tabby.

“I have to go to Mother,” she said. “I can’t just be idle while Red…”

“No. You can’t go. We don’t want to risk out if they see you, too. We’ll send someone else. Miran, he’ll go. It will be safer that way.”

“Nan-” Raven cut herself off and tilted her head. Footsteps, heavy and distinct, grew closer and closer. The next moment, a boy burst out onto the balcony, his face flushed as he gasped for air.

“Lady,” he said, after regaining his breath, “You’re required at the Hall – it’s important, they said to run and get you straight away-”

“I will be there, thank you,” Nan said, dismissing the boy. She turned to Raven. “Stay here,” she said. “Don’t let yourself be seen.”

Raven made no reply, only watching Nan as she threw on a cloak and hurried down the staircase and out into the deepening dusk.Comment/critique some writing, please?
1. I think the pacing is okay, it's not too fast or too slow but sometimes it feels as if the dialogue between Nan and Raven was dragging on. I understand that their conversation is a really important part of the scene, but maybe you should put some minor action in between so it doesn't seem like they're just standing there while they talked

2. Hmm. The POV. That's actually kind of tricky because while I was reading the first half of your story, it sounded as if it was written in Nan's point of view. I'm guessing Raven is the main character? If she is, focus on her part the most - describe what she sees, says, feels more than you describe the other characters

3. I love the description in the beginning. It was beautiful. The dialogue also made it clear what was going on in the story. Yeah, I think it held my interest pretty well

4. I'm not sure how to answer this. I'm not a very good analyst when it comes to writing style.

Overall you're story's good. I can see from this excerpt that it's going to have lots of action in it -which is good. What I think you should work on is the descriptions. What color is Nan's eye? How does Raven look like when she's in her human form? How does the scenery look like - are they near the mountaintops, or the city, or some hidden place in the forest that no one knows about?

Hope this all helps! And thank you for your own feedback on my question.Comment/critique some writing, please?
I really like this, I think you could get published eventually. Everything you asked was really nice. Tell me when it's released ;)Comment/critique some writing, please?

Ron Paul!

Why does it seem that so many people these days are afraid to look older? To look their age?

Plastic surgery and all sorts or creams and pills that rejuvenate the physical appearance are increasingly popular. These types of products are heavily advertised and marketed almost as a necessity for everyone. Even on Y/A lately there are several ads that show pictures of elderly people with a warning that says "don't look like this!" linking users to sites in order to purchase whatever "miracle" product they have to offer.

I find it really rather extreme, sad and wasteful that so many people are willing to under go major (unnecessary) surgery and apply/ingest all sorts of chemicals and toxins just to look unnaturally youthful.

My question is why are people so afraid to look old or look their age? It is natural for people to get wrinkles and gray or silver hairs in time. Why does it seem like the majority are trying so hard to hide or reverse the natural effect of time on appearance? What is your opinion on this fascination that many have with looking young? (And it's not just women but men also. There seems to be more and more beauty products and surgeries for men these days.)Why does it seem that so many people these days are afraid to look older? To look their age?
I think media has a huge part to play in this. Look at some of the stars out there. Will do anything to stay looking youthful. I personally would rather grow old gracefully then have surgery after surgery to the point where my face doesn't function right.
Because in America, the divorce rate is over 70% and that leaves a lot of women single, and men in this country over whelmingly judge females by her youth and appearance.

So the only chance a divorced older women has is to try to look young. Why does it seem that so many people these days are afraid to look older? To look their age?
i plan on getting botox as soon as possible..i feel OLD and i'm only 19
I don't know.

But then again I don't look my age. I WISH I did though.

I'm 20 and I have a 16-year-old sister whom everyone thinks is my TWIN. It's really annoying to go somewhere with her and have people say, "Wow, you're twins!"

But what's really bad is sometimes people think she's the 20 year old. Ouch!

People tell me I'll appreciate this when I'm 50 and look 30 but I won't know until then. Why does it seem that so many people these days are afraid to look older? To look their age?
Simple people are vain and are told over and over that the need to look better than they do. Doctors are greedy and will do anything to make a buck so they make up problems they feel will make them lots of money and people will believe them cause they are doctors and are supposed to be smart. Enough people believe the lies and tell others the same lies.

Yes dogs originated from wolves. But your avoiding the question. Why are designer dogs bad?

From precious pomeranians to mangy mutts, all domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) seem to be descended from the Eurasian gray wolf (Canis lupis). But what we still don't know is exactly when and where our best friends transformed from predators into partners. And such knowledge might help solve the long-disputed question of exactly why dogs were the first animal to be domesticated.

Excerpt from Scientific American - http://www.scientificamerican.com/articl…

Though some people do not see a difference between so called "rare breeds" and the current craze of breeding "designer dogs", there truly is a difference. Rare breeds are breeds actually in development and working towards a single type, or old breeds that have fallen out of favor, resulting in a drastic decline in the population. Designer dogs is actually a nice label for the practice of interbreeding two distinct breeds. Before the world became so politically correct, dogs of this nature were referred to as mutts or the proverbial "Heinz 57". Designer dogs are not being bred to develop a single breed type, but are simply catering to what the dog buying public is willing to purchase, and one has to give credit for the clever marketing ploy that persuades buyers to part with hundreds of dollars for the very same dogs that shelters often cannot give away. Not to say that designer dogs don't make fine companions, but the difference in breeding goals should be noted. -

Excerpt from American Kennel Club - http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/AKC_Dog_…|||Folks who sell designer breeds are really just selling Mutts. I don't have anything against mutts, but lets call them what they really are.

And the shelters are chock full of mutts that need loving homes.|||Aren't we controlling the mixture of genes when we put two cows together in the same stall? Are we not making a designer cow, one that is bigger, and meatier than the rest? Using this logic, designer dogs are not bad. "Controlled mating" is control mating whether it is done inside or outside of a lab.|||i was going to type an answer- then i realized that Reality Check said it for me.

could you hang around, and just paste the link to this question on every Q kids ask about their cocka-collie or their bichon-weiller?|||Because they're bred by greedy liars.|||Preaching to the choir here dude...|||Am I the only one seeing that you're contradicting yourself HUGELY here?? You ask why designer dogs are bad, and yet you list all the EXACT reasons they're bad!!

The domestication of dogs from wolves is irrelevant. We all know where dogs came from. And no, pure breds from reputable breeders ARE NOT more prone to health issues, etc... due to inbreeding. This is because when reputable breeders inbreed, they do so from experience, based on the knowledge they have of their dogs' genetics. It's also done AFTER having all dogs screened for genetic health issues. Show me ONE "designer" dog breeder that does ANY health testing on their dogs, or that is breeding for more then money. I'd put down $10 that says you CAN'T find one. Why? Because they DO NOT exist. Period. What's the issue? Exactly that. What's the point in breeding more pet quality mutts, when THOUSANDS die in shelters daily, that are the EXACT same mixes, and the EXACT same quality, as those being created by "designer breeders".

IF it were done with a PURPOSE in mind, (and I don't just mean the purpose of demand and supply), by people that actually screened the dogs, etc... I wouldn't care. However, show me ONE "designer" breeder that's creating their mutts for a purpose OTHER then to provide what society wants. Show me ONE that's doing it to improve a breed, or create a new breed at all. You can't breed two labradoodles and get a litter of labradoodles. There is NO consistency whatsoever, and there never has been, therefore they ARE NOT trying to create anything except a walking ATM machine. That goes with ANY of the "designer" breeds. NONE of their breeders are doing it for a purpose, other then to fill their own pockets.|||online my dog has a hybrid breed name: Labmeiraner (may have spelled wrong). he is lab and weimeraner mix. a mutt is all. designer dogs are for idiots with too much money.

I have done dog grooming on mixes like goldendoodles. they suck to groom. the hair is nasty and most owners let it go too long and it gets matted to the point of being shaved off too short, cause that's the only option left.|||I don't get it. You ask in your question "Why are designer dogs bad?" but then site excerpts that don't support your argument.

There IS a difference between the breeding of purebreds and the breeding of designer mutts.

Most designer mutts are 1st or at most 2nd generation crosses. The breeds we have today are works of 100s of year of crossing and breeding to get a reliable result. When I take a German Shepherd and breed it to another German Shepherd, I get a litter of German Shepherds. When I take a Lab and breed it to a Poodle, I get a mystery match litter of puppies. Call them what you want, but they aren't a breed and they never will be until I get a reliable results. Breeding Labs to Poodles and then Labs to Poodles and getting "Labradoodles" doesn't make it a new breed.

The other problem is that these dogs are NEVER health tested and cleared for genetic conditions. Well-bred purebreds are. Not all breeders of purebreds health test either....though they should. My point is, that if someone wants a mixed breed dog, with unknown traits, then they should get one from the shelter.

I've owned my share of mutts and purebreds and they all have made great pets.

The only breeding I can support is that of show or working dogs with titles who come from breeders who do genetic health testing. Otherwise, pick up one of the 100000000s of pups in a shelter. Badly bred purebreds are just as bad as designer dogs IMO.

ETA: Kaper put it perfectly.

Until someone wants to go about creating a breed standard for a "puggle" and creates more "puggles" by breeding them to each other for many many generations they will not become a new breed.

Generally breeds have multiple breeds in the foundation stock added for different reasons. This is different to breeding two purebreds and slapping a cutesy name on it.

I really don't get your logic. I'm trying hard to follow you, but you are bouncing around all over the place.|||you posted a question earlyer and i typed ALOT. i'm not sure if you need all these answers now, but here is what i typed:

People react because there are good dogs, that need a home in shelters EVERYWHERE shelters are filling up and people need to adopt, before breed. if you want a certain dog with certain traits, do some research. I'm positive there is a dog somewhere, someplace, that is abandon in a shelter somewhere. no, breeding Isn't "evil", in my opinion, its just something that shouldn't be done in this now. Like i said, there are lots of shelters out there.

Training is something that could be done with any dog. You can train dog to be perfect for someones needs, weather its a protection dog, a trick dog, or almost anything!

Another thing people worry about with breeding is about responsible breeders. Some breeders will carelessly sell dogs to puppy mills, or Puppy breeding factories that are nothing but, cruel, mean, and inhuman. they are places were dogs are treated as "money Makers" instead of "living animals" they have minimum conditions for there dogs, and they dog care about the dogs health what-so-ever. here is a link to a video about puppy mills and how they look:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIV5l4gd_Oo

This is why people don't trust people with breeding as much. these conditions are horrible. often the decided puppies are thrown in garbage bins like trash. if you want to know about breeding dogs for traits, hears a video about puppy mills and how it affect professional dog trainers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVzSzS3kYgg

hope this helped|||Why are designer dogs bad? This is not so much a question that gets 'avoided' as one of those Elephants-in-the-room that people don't admit they're seeing. There is snobbery involved in getting twee mixed breeds (aka. mutts - but 'mutt' is too dorwnmarket). Then there is inverse snobbery from a lot of people who resent 'poseurs' who dare to support this travesty of dog breeding.

That's the main reason why there is all this angst.

The facts relating to bad breeding practises, poor health, the naivite of many first time dog owners who are now starting with a designer mutt, and the surfeit of these dogs making it harder for already-full shelters to rehome their dogs make powerful secondary secondary arguments.

Does that address your actual question?|||Why did you delete your other rant - er, question?

Not sure why it's necessary to post the origin of the domestic dog - yes, we all know they are only about 2% dissimilar from the wolf, quit beating that dead horse.

Unless mutts are screened for congenital disease, are sold before they're born, and are bred in the first place for a WORKING need, then there's no need for them to exist.

There are over 400+ PUREBREDS in existence today. You telling me that you can't pick out a healthy speciman to do what you need it to do from that ginormous of a list?

Bull.

As far as spouting baloney about "designer" dogs - they're mutts. ALL of them. Don't care how many "oodles" and "poos" you add to the name, they're still mutts. Not a thing wrong with mutts - however, the vast majority of them don't have parents that have ever had OFA/CERF ratings.

It is ABHORRANT to keep breeding diseased dogs just because of people's perverted desires - "She should be a mommy!" - "Sex is natural!" - "My dog is pretty/smart/has great markings/a great watchdog/etc. and should be bred to continue those traits!"

There is NOTHING that makes any of the thousands of new badly bred pups born every single day in this country BETTER than the THOUSANDS of dogs killed every single day in this country. NOTHING.

EDIT: "Yes there are unscrupulous people in all aspects of life but that does not mean that there aren't honest well meaning people who breed designer dog."

I mean EXACTLY that!

Either you have some nitwit ignorant person who is breeding half-@ssed without ALL of the information necessary (not honest) or you have a scuzzy BYB/Puppy Mill churning out whatever lines their pockets faster (not honest or well-meaning).

It's either breed happy, healthy PUREBREDS or breed happy, healthy, WORKING MUTTS. It's black and white, no shades of grey here.

EDIT: "Purebred dogs can have more health issues due to inbreeding."

Oh, right . . . and so NONE of the "designer" mutts are EVER coming from badly bred, inbred purebreds in the first place? LOL What in the world are you on about?? WELL-BRED purebreds - those with genetically healthy pedigrees - are NEVER used to make random mutts; badly bred dogs are the ones that are cheaper, more obtainable, and don't come with a strict breeder contract, so THEY are used for breeding mutts.

GOOD breeders often do linebreeding and OCCASIONALLY inbreeding - but they know their dogs' pedigrees, they understand genetics, they consult with their breed mentors, get advice from their reproductive veterinarians, etc. before they ever attempt ANY breeding.|||The issue I have with it, aside from the FACT that almost all "designer" breeders do NOT spend a dime nor a minute of time and effort to find genetically healthy stock, is that the majority of them are using underhanded tactics and outright lies and misdirection to sell their puppies.

They claim that any "doodle" or "poo" will not shed, {they do} that they are smarter than purebreds, {they're not} and that they have "hybrid vigor", {which is total crock o'**** and a lame justification for not spending any time, effort or money on choosing genetically healthy stock}.

They call them "breeds", which is a slap at the breeders that devoted lifetimes to developing real breeds.

You can't just take two dogs, breed them and call it a breed, it don't work that way.

If that's not bad enough, the majority don't take their own back, let alone do rescue.

If you can't at least rescue any dog that was born because you decided to breed it's parents, you shouldn't breed them in the first place.

"Designer breeders" get two dogs from wherever, standard and genetics be damned, breed them and then take money from any one that comes along, that puppy that just went out the door never crosses their minds again.

That's why I have a problem with "designer breeders". It's not the dogs' fault, they are just as much victims of this sort of breeding as real breeders and shelters, {which are loaded with designer dogs, because they shed, they got big, they were too hard to train, yada yada.}|||No, where dogs came from doesn't really factor in. Assuming we all accept they were domesticated from wolves, the selective breeding continued until we had purebred lines. Wolves have a hunt sequence. We see truncated versions of this sequence in different breeds. Retriever chase, but don't attack. Some breeds stalk. Certain breeds that produced only offspring with those desired traits, not all the traits the original domesticated wolf dog had.

I fail to see what relevence that quote has to the argument of breeding designer dogs. "Designer dogs are not being bred to develop a single breed type, but are simply catering to what the dog buying public is willing to purchase, and one has to give credit for the clever marketing ploy that persuades buyers to part with hundreds of dollars for the very same dogs that shelters often cannot give away. Not to say that designer dogs don't make fine companions, but the difference in breeding goals should be noted."

That is exactly our point.

They are basically saying that "designer dog" is a more politically correct term for a mutt or a heinz 57.

Why are designer dogs bad? Why are they good? What makes them different from the mixes overrunning the shelters?

I can tell you what the difference in well bred purebred and the purebreds overrunning the shelters is. It is they were bred with health and temperament in mind. They come from lines that have had health clearances for genetic diseased, from a breeder who knows the lines, the traits, the health issues and the temperament. Designer dogs don't. Few DD breeders do health clearances. Since mixes are unpredictable, they aren't breeding for certain traits.

I no more support irresponsible breeding of purebreds than I do of mixes, just to be clear.

------------

I am sorry, you just seem to keep changing what you are asking or saying here and contradicting yourself.

I have said in another question and in the one you deleted, I have no problem with crossbreeding to introduce some healthy genes. I have no problem with mixing breeds and selectively breeding to create a new breed.

But that is NOT what these designer dog breeders are doing. They are simply producing first and second generation mixes. They are not breeding to produce anything in particular, they are not breeding for health. They are mixing two dogs and calling it a new breed.

---------------

Ok, you are impossible to follow.

"If you agree that all dog descended from wolves than logic follows that all subsequent dogs are designer dogs breed to produce a certain set of characteristics and traits."

Producing a certain set of characteristics and traits is PUREBRED. You already accepted the designer dogs are not purebred, but mutts.

Purebred is NOT a term that applies only to doga. It is a scientific term that applies to all organisms.

Purebred does not mean 'never been mixed'. So the fact that thousands of years ago all dogs were essentially mutts does not mean that they are now or that designer dogs are the same.

Purebred - denoting a pure strain obtained through many generations of controlled breeding for desirable traits

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/purebre…

True breeding -

A true breeding organism , sometimes also called a pure-bred, is an organism having certain biological traits which are passed on to all subsequent generations when bred with another true breeding organism for the same traits. In other words, to "breed true" means that two organisms with a particular, heritable phenotype produce only offspring with that (same) phenotype.

By way of it does not contrast - a non -true-breeding organism can (and will, some of the time) produce offspring with different phenotypes (physical characteristics). http://www.reference.com/browse/True_bre…

Purebreds are not mutts. When you breed a purebred to the same purebred, you have a known set of characteristics that will appear because it is truebreeding.

When you breed a designer dog to the same type of designer dog, you don't.

Yes, designer dogs *can* become purebreds, if they go through generations of selective breeding for the desired traits. But unless someone actually does this, not just breed first and second generations as is the current practice, they won't.

  • Can anyone give me opinions on my corporate branding?

    Hello,

I'm in the process of establishing a software-based research firm whose target market mainly consists of corporate clients. I'm having a design company create my corporate branding and identity. The initial concepts are of the letterhead and business card. There are elements I like of with all.

*Set 1: I like the 1st in that it adds an accent color to my image. Between my logo and current colors of my site, it's heavily blue and heavily gray. So, I think the goldish color adds a unique touch that can make me more easily identifiable. BUT, I'm unsure if it's too bold? Will it take away from my professional image w/ corporate clients?

*Set 2: This set seems more traditional and corporate-friendly. It incorporates my grays well and such, and seems to be a safer bet.

*Set 3: This is a very clean, minimalist look that also seems to be a safe bet.

I'm no marketing or art expert, so can anyone shed some opinions? Also, feel free to give ideas on how to improve upon these.

    Thanks!

You color scheme is nice, and it has an inviting soft approach.

What I recommend is spending more time on your messaging and your offer strategy. These days a static corporate brochure isn't enough, and you can do some really cool things with digial print that keep your image, but also lead to more sales. Check the resource below for some education on the subject.

Why do younger women like this guy?

at my work, theres a 54 yr old guy who is a manager in the HR department. He's short, paunchy, glasses, full beard, his hair and facial hair has a fair amount of gray in it. younger women seem to love this guy for some reason. in 2006 he had a baby with 23 yr old asian gal that was interning there, last year he had a baby with a 20 yr old intern who was good looking college girl and now he's having a kid with his current girlfriend who works here as a marketing analyst who is 26. she's newly divorced and has two younger kids. this is all in addition to the 4 other kids he has from two previous marriages! he's not a bad guy, its just kind of maddening when there's good looking other men out there who cant get these kind of women like he does. any guy is gonna wish for all of the women, especially at that age and those hot, but not wish for the kidney stones that he suffers from. you to admire him for being able to urinate out a kidney stone in the mens room at work and not staying home to do it. he said that passing a kidney stone is the most painful experiece he's ever had. i heard its like having a baby for a man.Why do younger women like this guy?
It is either because of his personality, or at the risk of being vulgar, maybe he has a big unit, and legend has spread amongst the women folk.
He seems to have a problem with boundaries at work and my first thought is that maybe these women thought a relationship with him would help them have an in with advancement. That having been said, who knows why they find him attractive. Maybe they have daddy issues. Why do younger women like this guy?
well he could have a lot going on for him downstairs?

or he could be a really charming guy

he could also be a bit rich?

who knows....but since he's not bad it definitely could be his charm

I have blueish/gray smoke coming from the exhaust on rebuilt 302?

I have a rebuilt 302 and smokes some at idle and alot at acceleration. I seem to have some oil residue in the exhaust and i did the pistons right were i dont have the rings in a straight line everything is correct. i ran synthetic at first thanks to misleading summit technicians, but then after finding out this is not what to do i used motor flush and tried to clean it out then ran conventional oil with zinc treatment. I also did a compression test and on cyliners 5 and 6 i recieved 150 cylinders 7 and 1 i have 130 and the rest are 120. i have put 100 miles on it and still acts the same.... but now for some reason i am losing quite a bit of oil... like a quart in a half in a 30 mile drive. i have alot of after market parts such as custom ground cam, afr heads, edelbrock upper and lower intake, 30lbs injectors and mass air flow. anybody have suggestions thanks. DrewI have blueish/gray smoke coming from the exhaust on rebuilt 302?
Good rebuilt engines come with excellent warranties, cheap rebuilds don't. which one did you buy? There are "chop shops" that pull engines and then just change the oil, spark plugs, and finally they steam clean the engine. You got ripped off and should contact your State AG's Office and let them get your money back for you. No matter what, DON"T drive that engine one more mile! The company will look for reasons to blame you so don't put any more miles on it.I have blueish/gray smoke coming from the exhaust on rebuilt 302?
I agree with Neil. Perform a wet test on all of the cylinders and record your readings. You will need to put a teaspoon or so of motor oil into each cylinder and crank it a few times with the coil wire removed and then take the reading. If the readings are rising then the problem is with the rings. Check your piston sizes as compared to the bore and check the end gap on the rings. I suspect that the 130 and 120 reading cylinders have some kind of probem with the rings. If the wet test yields the same results as the dry test then you will have to remove and inspect both heads and replace the head gaskets but with the engine consuming a quart of oil in thirty miles it is doubtful that this is a head problem. .I have blueish/gray smoke coming from the exhaust on rebuilt 302?
Did you check the gap on the rings? The major difference in compression on the cylinders means either valve stem seals are shot, or piston rings are shot. Drop a few drops of oil into the bores with the lower compression, if this makes the compression rise then your rings are leaking. If it doesn't affect the compression, then the valves need re-grinding properly.
Did u do the break in cycle on the engine correct? or it could be a bent valve.

What do you think needs to be done about China's pollution problem?

It’s no doubt that China is the home to the world’s fastest growing economy. Since the late 1970s, China's economy has developed rapidly and continuously, however not without a price. This rapid industrial development has increased pollution and in turn negatively impacted the health of it’s people.

Many of China’s polluted rivers lie in the countryside, where these polluted rivers irrigate the crops that feed the nation. When Sanjay Gupta, as part of CNN Planet in Peril’s team, with went to one of these rural villages to inquire about the polluted water he was confronted by police. Clearly, pollution within China is a touchy subject. Wang Jinnan, one of China’s leading environmental researches is quoted saying “It is a very awkward situation for the country because our greatest achievement is also our biggest burden”. However the statics and the people behind them cannot be ignored. Nearly 500 million people lack access to safe drinking water. The World Bank and China’s own environmental agency, SEPA, estimated that polluted water causes about 60,000 premature deaths each year and is linked to rising cancer rates. Chinese cities often seem wrapped in a toxic gray shroud. Only 1 % of the 560 million people living in the city breathe air considered safe by the European Union. Thanks to air pollution, 400,000 people a year die prematurely to lung disease. In fact, cancer is now China’s leading cause of death. China has 16 of the 20 top most polluted cities.

Liukuaizhuang a small village just 120 kilometers south of Beijing. Liukuaizhuang was once a quiet rural village before the economic boom started by Communist reforms in December 18, 1978. Only 20 years later, almost 100 chemical plants and low tech factories are scattered across what used to be farmland. Waste from factories producing rubber, paint, plastic and other chemicals have blackened streams, poisoned farmland and polluted the air, creating deadly pollution clusters that locals call “cancer villages”; Liukuaizhuang being one of many. One in fifty people in the village of Liukuaizhuang have been diagnosed with cancer over the last decade, which is around 25 times higher than the national average.

These pollution producing factories are also producing toxic products which are then put on global markets. After companies in China decided to put cheap and toxic alternatives in food, an outburst of pet deaths in the United States and hundreds of people in Panama died from using toxic cough syrup. Recently China had tainted baby milk containing the chemical melamine, which is thought to have caused kidney stones in infants around the world.

Taking a step back and looking at China at a whole, it seems that for the past 3 decades China has put economic growth ahead of the environment and health of its people.

What do you think needs to be done? What do you think needs to be done about China's pollution problem?
There is nothing we as individuals can do, except change our buying habits, which is difficult to do since most goods available for purchase come from China.

And our government will not do much either, since China has, in effect, financed our national debt for years and continues to do so.

The Chinese people must rise up and demand change for themselves.

  • Help with this story?

Alright well I need help with my story, obviously. I need help with three names for three different kingdoms. I'll give a description for each of them and their king and please help me figure out a kind of creature to live there. One of those cities will be a human city. I already have one human city, one elfin city and another with another kind of creature. Thanks for your help!

1)Human King (Need name)-Kind but prone for causing war often. Is weak and easily manipulated He is good to his people (most of the time) and loves his family. He often humorous and loves to throw celebrations for the tiniest things.

He has blonde hair, green eyes, and tan skin.

Kingdom(Need name)-Is pretty in the summer and spring but dead in the winter. Is bleak usually and the people are boring. Has few farms because most of the families are rich and buy their food from the markets. Doesn't have any forests due to the king tearing them down for houses and firewood.

2)King (Need name)-He is cold and cruel and he hates everything in life. Is powerful and manipulative. He has the power (Need help with a power please. Not cheesy though.) He is sly and sneaky. He has black hair and dangerous gray eyes with pale skin. He's deathly skinny and slightly hunchbacked and handsome in an evil sort of way.

Kingdom (Need help with name and creature)-Is dead year round. It snows often and all of it's forests are black and dead. It's cold and crisp and has a lot of blizzards. The people are mischievous and mean. They kill the weak and only the strong can live there.

    3) King (Need name)- He's truly good. He is kind to his people and he has no enemies except the second king. He is loving and caring and always does what's best for his people. He's wise and knowledgeable. He can be mean when other king's threaten his kingdom. He has brown hair, brilliant blue eyes and a light tan. He's tall and slim and handsome.

Kingdom(Need name and creature)- It's beautiful and lush. It's green always, even in the winter and has plenty of forests. It has meadows and lakes and waterfalls. Farms and cottages dot the land and the people are laughing and kind.Help with this story?

A dream about food from another world and an object that kept the world good?

It was like I knew people from Mars and I wanted to buy food from there. After being there I saw markets of food from there. It seemed to be perfectly nutritious and a taste that i liked. The astrologers (I believe) refer to Mars as conflict. It seemed to me to be peaceful and spiritual.

This object had 7 pieces that had to be collected and put together. I never seen what the world would be without 1 and especially 7. 1 was taken away and the world became polluted, like everything was covered in dark gray grime. People talked in a rude and unexpressive way. I saw buildings like churches that were small and thought 'who could fit in there?' . I thought 'how could the first pieces have been collected it would have been quite a conquest' the piece was brought back and A went to humble chapel (not too small).

I even saw a levitated food plate in a hospital.A dream about food from another world and an object that kept the world good?
hello, Interesting dream, I think what is more important than anything is how you FELT during the dream. We can dream of something aweful but in the dream feel good doing it ,in which case it usually symbolizes something else. people think that they can buy a dream interpretation book and have their questions answered but this is simply not true. Considering we are the sum of all our life experiences, it only makes sense that an object in a dream may mean one thing to you and something totally different to me(i.e. you may have a had a certain experience in a chapel in the past that gives you an unique view of one)

it is also helpful to know that there is no such thing as an inanimate object in a dream, that object is an extension of your consciousness,

so take the things that stand out and try describing them like you would describe them to someone who has never heard of them before like someone from another planet. How would describe Mars, food, markets, astrologers, the dark gray grime and pollution, a church, and a hospital?

I do think it is interesting that Mars was the specific planet you dreamt of,considering all of our(NASA) efforts to get there not to mention we are ending the age of mars(2012) and begining the age of Aquarius(not that I subscribe 100% to astrology or anything)

I'm curious more than anything about the overall feeling of the dream.

WTH was with the whole cable box thing back in the day?

OK, unless you were paying for some scrambled premium channel like HBO or Showtime, what was the purpose of cable boxes, outside of making the cable companies loot even more money from every customer? Even the older crappier TV's were capable of getting all the channels, so why deny your own TV's capability? Another lame deal was anyone that I saw who had a cable box had nothing but a layer of rolling wavy gray fuzz overlaid on their otherwise crisp signal which I proved to a buddy was the interference of his cable box, since it has to be plugged in and from my experience the more devices between any signal source and display the crappier the results. Yet people loved their cable boxes up and down. Why? Unless you had some ancient UHF/VHF TV that only went up to channel 13, or got HBO or the primo channels, you didn't need it and it made your picture crappier. I don't get it, uber-slick marketing hustle perhaps?WTH was with the whole cable box thing back in the day?
well a lot of the people who bought the "premium" cable full of 400 some-odd channels would get a little chip-card from the cable company. that card would stick in the cable box and allow the box to uncode the signal and send it to the tv.

everyone I knew that had cable boxes had cards that went in them to make them work. of course, they were "black cards" which were purchasable in mexico and much cheaper than the cable company's cards, and did the same thing. Illegal, but no one does anything about it.

But the cable boxes i've seen never caused video interference. The one you saw might've been old, cheap, dirty, etc... or the connector cables were crappy or corroded- which is more likely.WTH was with the whole cable box thing back in the day?
Way back in the day, in the early 80s, I had to convince my mother to buy cable for the nascent MTV. Sigh. It cost me $5 a month over the basic cable channel price. But, well worth the babysitting money..

To answer your question... if you purchased Basic cable you got all the regular channels you could get with your tv antennae, but there was no interference or static. We were excited about the clear, crisp picture and not having to move the rabbit ears around... Television channels came in like radio channels do today, where the closer you were to the broadcast station, the better you could receive the channel. And if you were out a ways, and in the boonies you were out of luck. Family friends in Western Massachusetts had two or three channels on their television before cable.

Hope that gives you the information you were looking for.WTH was with the whole cable box thing back in the day?
Well I tell you what....TRY getting channels like HBO or Showtime or any of the HD Channels WITHOUT that Box....

He'd hold my hand,he's very affectionate %26amp; very "PDA" even when we've just gone out twice.I called him "Metrosexual" bec he's charming, funny %26amp; very vain in terms of keeping a good, healthy life-he's got this lean, sexy body bec he works out everyday,he does his own gardening during the weekends,he's very artistic %26amp; love Oscar Wilde's novel "The picture of Dorian Gray" that he actually went ahead %26amp; legally added Dorian to his name a few years ago.One time while talking on the phone I was abt to ask him somethin when he lightheartedly cut me short %26amp; said, "I'm not gay, I'm straight," %26amp; he laughed. That wasn't exactly what I was abt to ask but with all his funny gay-like mannerisms, I'm starting to feel he is! But I'm kinda confused here coz he's so affectionate! He gives sweet, tender kisses %26amp; everytime where together he seemed not being able to help himself from not touching me.I got so overly conscious that I'm starting to get paranoid.I think he felt that I'm sorta not yet ready to take whatever we have to the next intimate level %26amp; he seemed to get the message that I'm not into having sex yet.I was hoping we'd take it slow bec I don't want this promising thing goin' on between us to go nowhere. But after that 2nd meet, he seldom texts %26amp; calls anymore. He said work had been so crazy. It's fine with me coz nothin really happened but I just would like to ask if he's really gay %26amp; trying to cover that. I want to follow-up bec I'm so comfortable being with him, talking to him. I don't have to hide my own "happy gayness" with him! He's so damn fine as compared to the typical ****** guys I've gone out with before. Should i pursue the friendship? But if he's really gay, what is he doing with me? Btw, he's never been married %26amp; goes from one relationship to the other. He also has this some sorta high standards to women he dates, he said men are visual so he goes out with pretty girls with pretty hands, feet %26amp; boobs. lol.I met this guy online.i think he's perfect for me considering that he's in his mid-30s, close to my age,has a?
Unless he is a total player that has sucked you into an interest in him so he can get what he wants in the long run, you need to ask yourself what kind of relationship you want with him.

Would you rather he grope (not just touch) you whenever possible or give you some time to determine if you even want to get physically involved?

Perhaps you should be meeting in person in public places to talk. Get to know what interests you share (other than just an interest in each other). Common interests will give you things to talks about and ideas of things to do together. It will help build trust (and right now you do not trust him... you are looking for reasons not to get involved).

You should be able to determine if he is truthfully interested in you or just wanting to add you to his list of conquests. If you cannot do this, then assume the worst (he is a player). If you do not feel comfortable, move on.

  • Who deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?

Who in each UFC weight class do you believe deserves a title shot? and where do the rest stack up behind them on the ladder? What non-UFC fighters if signed would merit an immediate title shot?

    Example:

    Heavyweight:

    Champ- Brock Lesnar/Frank Mir

#1 Contender- Winner of Couture Noguiera (I usually think a fighter should have 2-3 big wins before getting a shot but with the HW division being so shallow marketability plays a huge factor, plus i personally want to see rematches, I know Nog can beat Mir and Couture was schooling the giant Lesnar just got caught)

2- Shane Carwin (HUGE victory over GG who I would have given this spot, would like to see him against another top contender before a title shot but have no doubt he is more skilled than current champ Brock Lesnar and just as big)

3- Behind Carwin it gets fuzzy but i think to establish another legit contender Joe Silva should pit undefeated Cain Velasquez against Cheick Kongo

    If signed- Fedor Emelianenko

    Light Heavyweight:

    Champ- Rashad Evans

#1 Contender- Lyoto Machida (I personally feel Rampage should have gotten an immediate rematch with Griffin but this fight is scheduled and should a good fight)

    2- Rampage

3- Winner of Thiago Silva/Forrest Giffin

4- Shogun Rua (this depends not only on him beating Chuck Liddell but also his cardio being back up to par, I feel Shogun is a shell of his former self after suffering 2 knee injuries that have ended the career of more than one football player, but with his credentials and pending a solid performance against Chuck I still feel he has his place in the title picture)

5- Luis Cane (2 TKOs in his last 2 fights against solid competition, some more big wins and some good marketing, could be a future title challenger)

If signed- Antonio Rogerio "Minotoro" Nogueira

    Middleweight:

    Champ- Anderson Silva

#1 Contender- Thales Leites (???How? not sure myself, good fighter but IMO if this fight wasn't already set in stone I would put him at the 4th or 5th spot)

2- Demian Maia (Undefeated, 5 straight submissions in the UFC, with Anderson's 1 weakness being wrestling and not caring if the fight goes to the ground I give Maia a good shot)

3- Yushin Okami/Nate Marquardt (both these guys deserve rematches with Silva, Joe Silva make this fight happen)

4- Richardo Almeida (rumor has it he may move down to WW though)

5- Yoshihiro Akiyama (has the credentials lets see how he does trading the octagon for the ring)

    If signed- Robbie Lawler

    Welterweight:

    Champ- Georges St. Pierre

#1 Contender- Thiago Silva (coming off a great year, pummeled 170's top fighters just like GSP did in 2005)

2- Jon Fitch/Dustin Hazelett (Fitch has proven he belongs at the top but needs another win or two to get a rematch with GSP, Hazelett has shown a solid game since his UFC depute and his only recent loss being to Josh Koscheck, a fight which IMO he was winning and may have been called a tad early)

3- Josh Koscheck (a top contender, got caught in his recent fight but if he keeps getting fights at the pace he has he should have no problem racking up the wins to get right back up to the front of the line)

4- Matt Serra/Hughes (These guys are still in it having only lost to the champ and #1 contender recently)

    If signed- Jack shields

    Lightweight

    Champ- BJ Penn

#1 Contender- Kenny Florian (finally this fight is signed)

2- Diego Sanchez (If he gets past Clay Guida that is)

3- Gray Maynard/Sean Sherk (Sherk needs another win to get a rematch with Penn/Florian, and Gray needs a battle with the cream of the crop)

4- Tyson Griffin (would love to see him finish a fight but a top contender none the less)

5- Joe Lauzon (but with his recent injury he will be out of competition for a year or more)

If signed- Shinya Aoki, Eddie AlvarezWho deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?
hw-winner of couture-nogueira or carwin-velasquez/kongo winner depending on which winner is more impressive

    if signed-fedor, no question

    lhw-machida

if signed i feel arona would be favored in a fight against anyone. arona in a cage with elbows would be insane. but with that said rogerio nogueira would be more deserving.

mw-maia. his jiu jitsu gives him a serious advantage over any opponent in the ufc. the only question is if he could actually get it to the ground

if signed-gegard mousasi, assuming of course he still would want to fight at 185(which it doesn't sound like he wants to anymore). if mousasi goes up to 205 then jacare would be pretty fun to see for the same reason as maia.

ww-alves. it will be interesting to see if gsp will be able to out-muscle this monster and impose his dominant wrestling on him.

if signed-aoki. while it might seem like an odd pick his jiu jitsu off his back is incredible and could make a fight against gsp pretty interesting. but then again gsp should be able to pick him apart on his feet so who knows?

lw-florian. he seems like a much hungrier fighter than bj at this point and could very well earn him the upset victory.

if signed-aoki again. two jiu jitsu wizards going at it. but once again bj should be able to pick him apart on his feet but that hasn't stopped aoki in the past too much, so who knows?Who deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?
(All these ideas would obviously take place after all of the champions current fights)

HW - 1) If Cain Velasquez beats Heath Herring, than he should fight Shane Carwin for the contendership.

    2) Carwin faces winner of Couture/Nogueira for contendership

As long as Velasquez, Carwin, Dos Santos, and Kongo are in the picture.

LHW - 1) Rampage gets next dibs.

Luiz Cane is a prospect as well, and if Liddell beats Shogun than beats another top fighter than I'd give Liddell another go at it.

MW - Maia shud get the next shot, after that the winner of Bisbing/Hendo. Than either Okami or give Marquardt a rematch. Akiyama's in that picture too now that he's in the UFC

WW - Not much after Alves, I'd say possibly a move to MW for GSP for a superfight with Silva, if not than I guess Kampmann after a couple more wins or Swick. Koscheck lost all momentum by getting KO'd by Paulo Thiago, and even if Fitch beats Thiago, nothing really comes of it. IF Hazelett can string together a few more notable wins than sure but, no ones really emerged yet since Alves got the title.

LW - Diego looked great at 155 so I'm thinkin' he could be a competitor for the title. If Sherk beats Edgar, than I could see a rematch between him and Penn. Tyson Griffin is moving on up their, despite his inability to finish a fight. (To be honest, he should just drop to featherweight). And like you said, if signed, than either Aoki or Alvarez would be great but Alvarez is currently with Belator and Aoki will undoubtedly stay with Dream.Who deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?
    Heavyweight

    Champ: Brock Lesnar/Frank Mir

    1) Winner of Nogueira-Couture - winner deserves shot

    2) Loser of Nogueira-Couture - loser is still top 4

    3) Shane Carwin - great win over Gonzaga

    4) Cheick Kongo - needs to face higher competition

    5) Cain Velasquez - needs a win over Herring

    ?) Fedor Emelianenko

    Light Heavyweight

    Champ - Rashad Evans

    1) Lyoto Machida - never lost a round, let alone a match

    2) Rampage Jackson - too close match against Jardine, but still at top

    3) Forrest Griffin - if he beats Silva

    4) Chuck Liddell - needs to beat Rua and get back to his old style

    5) Keith Jardine - impressive performance against Rampage

    ?) None

    Middleweight

    Champ - Anderson Silva

    1) Dan Henderson - last opponent to really give Silva a chance

    2) Nate Marquardt - great all around fighter, great win over Gouveia

    3) Yushin Okami - needs to face tougher competition

    4) Demian Maia - top notch jiujitsu, but one-dimensional

    5) Michael Bisping - needs to face higher competition

    ?) Robbie Lawler

    Welterweight

    Champ - Georges St. Pierre

    1) Thiago Alves - earned his shot with win over Koscheck and Hughes

    2) Josh Koscheck - a fluke loss to Thiago, but will make up for it

    3) Jon Fitch - beats everybody but GSP

    4) Matt Hughes - needs a win over Matt Serra, but still a legend

    5) Mike Swick - dominated every recent opponent

?) Jake Shields, but not immediately

    Lightweight

    Champion - BJ Penn

    1) Kenny Florian - dominated all recent opponents

    2) Sean Sherk - still a strength and cardio maniac

    3) Tyson Griffin - lost a close decision to Sherk

    4) Gray Maynard - can't finish, but dominates nonetheless

    5) Clay Guida - needs to face higher competition

    ?) Shinya Aoki
    Kongo, Rampage, Okami,Silva,Florian

Making vinyl records the old-fashioned way

Posted by Daniel Terdiman 4 comments

At United Record Pressing in Nashville, Tenn., LPs are still made the old-fashioned way: with lots and lots of vinyl. This is a bin full of little vinyl pellets that will be melted into records.

    (Credit: Daniel Terdiman/CNET News.com)

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--When people think of the Beatles coming to America, they usually conjure up images of The Ed Sullivan Show and screaming teenage girls chasing the Fab Four on the streets of New York.

But here in Music City, there's something else to commemorate the earliest stages of the British Invasion: the fact that the first American Beatles 7-inch record was produced by United Record Pressing--then, as now, one of the largest makers of vinyl in the world.

On Monday, as I swung through Nashville on Road Trip 2008, I was lucky enough to get to visit the production facilities of United Record Pressing here and get a firsthand look at how LPs are made. Before you scoff at the notion of making records, consider that over the last few years, the format has made a big comeback, with sales skyrocketing and turntables moving off store shelves like they haven't in years.

Why? The reason is pure irony.

According to Jay Millar, the marketing and sales manager for United Record Pressing, it has everything to do with the emergence of Apple's oh-so-ubiquitous MP3 player.

"It really started picking up when iPods started coming onto the scene," Millar said. "Everything got so sterile with digital that people were not spending time" with the physical manifestation of their music.

A record-pressing machine at United Record Pressing. The company is one of only three in the United States that still produces LPs in any meaningful amounts.

    (Credit: Daniel Terdiman/CNET News.com)

In other words, as iPods began to dominate the music world, people were leaving their CDs on the shelves, and iTunes downloads, as well as those via file-sharing services, took over.

But for audiophiles used to actually handling some sort of disc, this change has led to a reversal of fortune for the LP, a format long thought to have gone the way of the floppy disk.

For a company like United Record Pressing, that's been great news, as its sales have been going up steadily as more and more artists turn to records as a way to get their music into the hands of people who care about it.

So how is a record made?

First, a separate company with facilities nearby takes the original recording--which can come in the form of an audio tape, but (audiophiles, cover your eyes here) more often comes on CDs since many artists are using software like ProTools to cut their tracks--and uses it to cut the familiar circular grooves into an object called a lacquer.

The lacquer is then delivered to United Record Pressing, which begins the process of actually making the LPs.

First, the lacquer is sprayed with a layer of silver, which, after it sets, is then peeled off. The resulting sheet is known as the master, and it is the opposite of a record, because it has ridges rather than grooves.

The master is then used to make what is known as the mother, a metal version of the record that can, itself, actually be played.

At United Record Pressing, black is not the only color of vinyl that is used. There's also red, orange, blue, gray, and even a mixture made from the cuttings of the other colors.

    (Credit: Daniel Terdiman/CNET News.com)

The mother is then pressed into what is known as the stamper, and this, too, has ridges. The stamper actually is the basis of every record that comes out of this factory.

At this point, it's all about raw vinyl, millions of little chunks of the material that resemble Pop Rocks.

And it's not just black either. The company also makes records that are red, orange, blue, and gray. Sometimes, it takes all the discarded vinyl from several pressings and mixes them together into a kind of hodgepodge color.

First, the vinyl is melted down into what is called the biscuit. This is the center of the record, the round part with no grooves and the little hole. To this is added the label, which is pressed onto the biscuit, a step that doesn't require any adhesive. Rather, the biscuit is so hot from the vinyl being melted down that the label sticks right on.

The labels, which are printed here by the thousands, are actually baked in a special oven so that they retain no moisture, something that could cause bubbling on the actual record.

To ensure that labels don't bubble up after being pressed onto a record, the labels are baked in an oven to remove any moisture.

    (Credit: Daniel Terdiman/CNET News.com)

Then, the biscuit is placed in the middle of a machine and then it is joined together with a fresh supply of vinyl, and together they are smashed between a plate and the stamper. A blade then shears off the excess vinyl, and voila! A brand new record slides out of the machine and onto a rack.

When all is said and done, it's actually a remarkably simply process. But there's still much more that must happen before an LP leaves the facility.

First, at least one of each new album run must be tested. So on one side of a room that long ago was used as a room for record release and signing parties--Hank Williams Jr. had a party thrown for him here when he was 16, Millar said--a woman is sitting and bobbing her head as she listens to songs on headphones, making sure the new record has no problems. If it does, United Record Pressing will have to tell the record company what the issue is.

There's also the small matter of putting the records in their sleeves--something I saw two people tucked away in a corner of one room doing. They had their process down pat: grab an LP, inspect it quickly for obvious defects, pick up a sleeve, slide in the record, repeat.

    Click for gallery

Millar showed me a room in the basement of the building that contained thousands and thousands of folders--really, they seemed like extra-thick album covers with no art--that contain the masters of every record the company has produced over the years. This is a treasure trove bar none, since United Record Pressing works with pretty much every major label you can imagine.

Inside each folder is the master, and a full set of all the associated materials: the master, a label, an album jacket, and anything else that might be included, such as liner notes. And these days, as with an Elvis Costello album Millar showed me, the folders may also hold an insert with information for a digital download of the album.

In fact, it is these digital downloads that may be heralding the re-emergence of the LP and the death of the CD. That's because many artists are now offering record buyers a one-time free download of all the tracks on the album as a bonus.

This is still a small enough phenomenon, of course, to barely register on Apple's radar. iTunes is safe, in other words.

Still, for audiophiles who used to buy CDs, this gives them a way to have a physical disc to listen to the music on, as well as a way to easily tote it with them.

"People don't need their discs to be compact anymore," said Millar, "because you can't get much more compact than MP3. So it's back to the big discs."

Have old 78 speed record, 33 speeds for the lps, 45 for the singles, still keep them, but also have tapes, music and video, and dvds and cds, love them all, music is music now matter how is comes, love it! :)What are the chances of vinyl records replacing CDs and MP3s? Is audio technology going backwards?
Although vinyl records' sale increased this year, this can not mean that there is a tendency for it to dominate the market. But collectors would love this. In case you need to buy one, check out some coupons for discount at http://couponsaver.org/.

What are the chances of vinyl records replacing CDs and MP3s? Is audio technology going backwards?
For the most part, only die hards, really have any real interest in vinyl. Some people say records sound better, but it's only true, when compared to low bit-rate mp3s, and only if the record is in new condition.

Studies have shown Digital is actually capable of producing a higher sound quality at higher bit-rates. Vinyl records may be a cool thing to own, but they're never going to make a full comeback. Even inferior cassette tapes killed record sales, by way of convenience, alone.

A really, really, really rough draft of an introduction to my short story?

So, this is basically what I'm doing: I'm taking this song, Breakeven by The Script (see below for the link), and I'm making a short story out of it. My idea is to describe two people and their journeys together over the course of a year. So, it'll show the progression of their relations (friendship to relationship to... you'll have to wait and see), but it'll be choppy and divided by months. I've written a little bit so far and I'm looking for opinions. Keep in mind that I'm testing out a different writing strategy: I'm writing as simply as possible (no pretty words, no metaphors, etc.) so the storyline has to support itself.

(Title) Pieces (or something along those lines)

    One year. Just one year.

    Twelve months.

We met in April. Ask me the date, I’ll tell you I forgot, but it’s just a lie. I remember the day, I remember the weather, I remember the time, but most of all, I remember you.

A business trip for my father’s company sent me to Massachusetts that March. “Marketing,” he said, “I want you to develop a stronger marketing strategy on the east coast.” With that, the next plane ticket for a seven o’clock flight to Boston and everything I own packed into a 28″x21″ suitcase; I was off to fulfill my father’s wishes.

Late nights on my laptop, early meetings with corporate officials and, if you were lucky, a five minute break for lunch was the life I knew for six weeks. It was after those weeks, however, that my work in city known for its tea parties— my poor humor at its best —was complete and I would be returning to Southport.

It was a Friday morning. April 9th to be exact. I shuffled through my wallet, retrieved my ticket and handed it to the woman at the plane’s entrance. She was a plump woman. Mid-sixties, maybe early-seventies. Frail hair with streaks of blonde from her youth, gray from her stress and white from her age. She had a crooked smile, the perfect match for lazy eyes. To some, she’s a committed stewardess, but looking back at it now, she’s just another puzzle piece.

(That's just the introduction and the beginning of the actual story, but I've written my final line, so that's the next part).

Sometimes I laugh away the pain, but other times, I cry. This time, I cry. (End).

So, what do you think? All comments, revisions and suggestions are welcomed. Thanks! :)

P.S. The link to the song if you're interested:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsfNLkwVy…A really, really, really rough draft of an introduction to my short story?
You know what I find impressive is that the song is about falling to pieces, heart breaking because she's moving on etc. I didn't recognize the song title and band at first, so I read your story and thought, ok I'll find some song about a trip on a plane and an old stewardess, but nothing like it in the lyrics, and I'm actually really impressed! Where did all of this come from? I like this song also. I listen to this radio station here in CT that plays alot of pop stuff and I hear that song every day at work on my mp3 radio.

You know real authors take their time and develop an environment, a character, and some people might see it as nonsensical or slow or pointless, but you have the beginnings of an interesting story here. You don't use big words, and that's ok. You go into details with your imagination (whether it's from your life or completely made up) you describe it well. Very mature writing. Most teens write about giggles and flirting at school, you're writing about life as a son or daughter going on a business trip to help out your father.

The intro is a romantic teaser so we know there will be a fateful meeting of sorts. I think the most successful authors are the ones that write about what they've experienced, and use their experiences to fuel the passion in their writing. I think you have alot of potential to do just that. I think that ending line is something you feel, and you want to build your story around that line and the song.

I couldn't possibly suggest anything different, I would have to see more or discuss your whole vision or plan to really give any suggestions. So far it seems to be developing very nicely!

Hope this helps ;) heheA really, really, really rough draft of an introduction to my short story?
Its great!!! I love it! But I think you need to slow it down a little, your kind of rushing through it. But other than that I loved it!A really, really, really rough draft of an introduction to my short story?
I think its awesome!!! Im just not really sure what its about, i have a general idea but ss long as you explain soon im fine. I think the detail is good and the kind of brushed off thing it kinda reminds me of the movie elizabethtown with orlando bloom and kirsten dunst. Check it out if you need any more ideas.

    Hope this helps :D

Does this sound like I am dressing conservative? ?

In less then 8 hours I will be making my future, or I will be continuing on a path to keep looking for a job. Tomorrow I am applying for a very conservative company. My personality, and design background has made me always dress very trendy, and very modern.

For tomorrows interview, I am wearing a medium gray suit, a black shirt, and a black and silver tie to really bring the suit and shirt together. I've done a ton of research and even talked to different people who have worked for this company. And they all scream "dress conservative".

I am all about the white shirt, and a simple navy blue tie, but that's not me, I am always trying to allow a person to see my true sense of design, Christ I went to college for graphic design and marketing. This job I am applying for is 100% marketing, but the company is way conservative.

Will my outfit break me? or make me... I need advice pronto and I love you all for your personal thoughts!

Does this sound like I am dressing conservative? ?
You can dress conservative without dressing plain and boring.

Don't your shirt unbottoned or your clothes too, obviously. Add in your personality and fashion, and I think they would like it. The idea you have sounds pretty good. Even some faded jeans and a black button up could be good. It's not too flashy, but apparently it is supposed to be formal wear.

Don't let people drag you down. Have fun with your fashion! You don't have to dress like a tramp or your going to a beach or anything, but you can still dress cute!

Oh and I'm sure your style with definately make you. Everyone loves a person with style.(And charm) It might even be refreshing for the company!Does this sound like I am dressing conservative? ?
If you really want to get this job and everyone is saying dress conservative, then do it. Wear the navy blue monkey suit and white shirt for a day and once you get the job and people get to know you then you can express your sense of style and personality. Until then suck it up and rock your interview.

And yes, the gray suit you descirbed is not conservative enough. If you want to wear the gray suit pair it with a white shirt and either a blue or red tie. Does this sound like I am dressing conservative? ?
wear what you want, and what you think they might like. so maybe combine the too. and remember that clothing is not as important as how you present yourself. be confident; and you
as lovely as ur outfit sounds, it wouldn't be a good idea to do it for an interview, stay safe and wear a traditional dark suit with white shirt etc. trust me u will feel a lot more secure when it comes time for the interview, last thing u'll need is to be worrying about what the interviewer thinks about ur attire! stay traditional for about a few weeks and then u can start showing more of ur personality after ppl get to know u more, good luck!

Who deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?

Who in each UFC weight class do you believe deserves a title shot? and where do the rest stack up behind them on the ladder? What non-UFC fighters if signed would merit an immediate title shot?

    Example:

    Heavyweight:

    Champ- Brock Lesnar/Frank Mir

#1 Contender- Winner of Couture Noguiera (I usually think a fighter should have 2-3 big wins before getting a shot but with the HW division being so shallow marketability plays a huge factor)

2- Shane Carwin (HUGE victory over GG who I would have given this spot, would like to see him against another top contender before a title shot but have no doubt he is more skilled than current champ Cock Chestnar and just as big)

3- Behind Carwin it gets fuzzy but i think to establish another legit contender Joe Silva should pit undefeated Cain Velasquez against Cheick Kongo

    If signed- Fedor Emelianenko

    Light Heavyweight:

    Champ- Rashad Evans

#1 Contender- Lyoto Machida (I personally feel Rampage should have gotten an immediate rematch with Griffin but this fight is scheduled and should a good fight)

    2- Rampage

3- Winner of Thiago Silva/Forrest Giffin

4- Shogun Rua (this depends not only on him beating Chuck Liddell but also his cardio being back up to par, I feel Shogun is a shell of his former self after suffering 2 knee injuries that have ended the career of more than one football player, but with his credentials and pending a sold performance against Chuck I still feel he has his place in the title picture)

2- Jon Fitch/Dustin Hazelett (Fitch has proven he belongs at the top but needs another win or two to get a rematch with GSP, Hazelett has shown a solid game since his UFC depute and only recent loss being to Josh Koscheck, a fight which IMO he was winning and may have been called a tad early)

2- Gray Maynard/Sean Sherk (Sherk needs another win to get a rematch with Penn/Florian, and Gray needs a battle with the cream of the crop)

3- Tyson Griffin (would love to see him finish a fight but a top contender none the less)

4- Clay Guida (this spot I would give to Joe Lauzon but with his recent injury he will be out of competition for a year or more, Clay is more of a gatekeeper but he is on a winning streak and if he continues should get his shot)

If signed- Shinya Aoki, Eddie AlvarezWho deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?
After all the title shots have been done and over with...

    HW:

    1) Carwin

    2) Kongo

    3) Winner of Big Nog/Couture

    LHW:

    1) Rampage (personally, I thought Lyoto did deserve a first shot at Rashad, but I much rather wanted to see Rampage-Rashad first. I'm a fan of Rampage and I think it would've been more exciting)

    2) Franklin (if he wins against Wandy in spectacular fashion)

3)Griffin (if he wins against T. Silva)

    MW:

    1) Okami (call me ridiculous, but he's been deserving of this for a real long time)

    2) Marquardt

3)Maia (depending on how A. Silva handles Leites' jiu-jitsu, he may cause problems for him, perhaps more than Marquardt. He REALLY needs to work the striking though. It is rather sub par)

    WW:

    1) Fitch

    2) Koscheck

    3) Maybe...Kampmann? If he wins his next 1-2 fights.

    LW:

    1) Winner of Guida/Sanchez

    2) Maynard

    3) SherkWho deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?
If fedor signed he would get an immediate title shot no doubt. They are actually thinking of a fedor vs. lesnar fight (if lesnar wins). i think carwin is the #1 contender in the ufc. However if Fedor does sign theres noway anyones going to beat him hes just to good at what he does!

with light heavyweight lyoto is #1 contender in my books hes one of the smartest and most tactical fighters i have ever seen. i am very certain hes going to win his upcoming. after that rampage does deserve another title shot.

in middle weight it really doesnt matter because andersons just going to blow through anyone he faces. he will be the champ for a while.

in welter weight i also think GSP is just unbeatable right now

thiago (its thiago alves not silva) is the #1 contendor and he is a good fighter just not as good as GSP

lightweight florian is #1 contendor and he could quite possibly beat BJWho deserves a title shot? (Your UFC rankings)?
All I have to say is that Brock Lesnar did NOT deserve a title shot. How do you only have 3 fights as a professional MMA fighter and get a title shot. If he would have beaten Frank Mir the first time. Then MAAAAAAAAAAAYBE. I think him and Dana got a little something worked out behind the scenes! lol!

As far as Rashad. He better win against Machida because Rashad vs Rampage would be a hell of a fight!
